It takes a certain amount of audacity to start a business. To stake a claim in the world that your idea and product are worth people spending their hard earned money on requires nothing but the utmost confidence and love for what you’re doing. Lucky for me, I’ve got a badass team overflowing with passion and optimism that we can create this dream together.
The confidence to charge towards something full steam ahead has always been a core part of my identity, the proverbial blessing and curse. When I take on great tasks, I’ve almost always been met with a patronizing “I’ll believe it when I see it” look from some folks in my life. The beginning of big journeys can be lonely and humbling. But then in that heavy quiet doubt, you start working. And that’s where the story of Sassy Pants really begins.
Like most of the things I set out to do, the beginning of this particular journey started with a vulnerable divulging of my dream to my trusted lady friends (they’re here!). Over burgers from The Habit (nom nom nom) a few months ago, I shared my dream of creating a clothing company for all body types that could change and shift as women moved through different aspects of their life and changes in their body.
I was training these friends for a half marathon (read more about that here!) and we just finished up one of their first training runs. With our body types running the gamut of size, height, weight, and shape, I was reminded once again of a huge problem that I previously thought was just my own: finding functional athletic apparel made for every body that didn’t seem like an afterthought.
Sure, there were some gems here and there that would be “just fine” for the workout I wanted to do, but after a while that started taking hits on my mental and emotional health. I found my self esteem chiseled down. My motivation languished. I learned that the beautiful ladies in my life have felt the same and I wanted to change that. I wanted women to be able to buy clothes that would fit their body exactly how it is, feel their value and worth, and be motivated to get moving together!
Their response to my dream was exhilarating. They loved it! And most importantly, they wanted to be involved. They wanted to build a community not restricted to just sizes and the ideal body type. They wanted a place where we could all explore health and wellbeing together. I couldn’t wait to get started, especially with them by my side.
So we’re in the beginning of this great journey and we’ve laid some solid foundation. We know exactly what we stand for and who our ideal customer is. We’ve dived into the world of designing, sourcing, and manufacturing. We know that we have a lot of work to do to execute this vision. But regardless of any of those patronizing looks that I have become so accustomed to, we’re going to keep charging forward in pursuit of this important work.
We will take you with us on this amazing journey through blog posts, social media, and a production vlog (!) over the coming months. Join us by subscribing to our email list to be the first to know exciting news and updates!
